Does art teach? Is picture really the books of the illiterate? Yes! The issue of art education in church is treated by this article in three ways. First, it carefully analyzes Pope Gregorius Ⅰ's two letter sent to Bishop Serenus of Marseilles in 599 and 600, which offer the Pope's apology for the use of artistic images in church against iconoclasts. As the Pope says, "what writing offers to those who read it, a picture offers to the ignorant who look at it." Gregory's dictum of picture as the 'book of the illiterate' has functioned as the papal justification of artists' art production and theologians' art education in medieval church.
Second, the article studies this Gregorian dictum's history of effect in church. It is developed into the "ratio triplex" of art by Bonaventure and Thomas Aquinas. Wycliffe and Luther has also approved its positive value in educating laity. Yet, the sharpest criticism of the dictum comes from John Calvin in his Institute. According to Calvin, images are forbidden by the Bible, teaches only falsehood, and were absent in early church.
Lastly, the article ends with short theological reflection on art and theology. It claims that the danger of idolatry is present not only in art but also in theology. Feminist theologians like Sallie McFague and Mary Daly have effectively shown the idolatrous nature of linguistic patriarchism in theology. Furthermore, the article also highlights the possibility of revelation through art affirmed by Arnold Schoenberg, Hegel, and Ricoeur. It ends with the conclusion that art indeed teaches.
