The approach to urban design concept can be divided in two. One is relative concept based on comparative study among UD, architecture and urban planning, the other is absolute concept based on the meaning interpretation of UD. In the relative concept, the relationship between UD and physical element can be defined in two ; one is to see UD, architecture and urban planning are related with configuring physical environment in the same dimension, the other is in the different ways. From point of the former, scale, dimension, materiality and complexity of design objects are the basis of argument giving differences among UD, architecture and urban planning. From the latter, UD, which can be characterized as designing of design environment, i.e. second-order design, is differed from the others in view of being indirectly concerned with configuring physical element. In the absolute concept, the meaning of UD can be interpreted in two ways ; 'design of city' and 'urban(e) design', based on the analysis of grammatical structure of 'urban design'. When we see UD as 'design of city', the basic characteristics of UD can be defined as 'intermediate design' which is connected with 'art of relationship'. Especially from view of 'intermediate design', the 'townscape context' among physical elements, 'functional context' between physical and non-physical elements and 'cyclical context' between individual and collective characteristics are basic concepts giving identities to UD.
