This study is to present an aspect to the fundamental data for the coming urban planning and to explain the shaping of urban landscape in Korea during the Japanese rule. From Lee-Dynasty, Kimchen has been a region easy accessible from the other local cities and areas, and has existed as a center of commercial transaction.
Kimchen has been experienced the rapid urbanization and a continuous increase in population after the opening of the railroad(Kyungpu-seon and Kyungpook-seon) and Japanese settlement. The population growth has required various kinds of urban facilities : residential facilities, traffic facilities, educational facilities, medical facilities and so forth. These facilities were mainly constructed for Japanese in their residential districts as a common colonial policy. In the process of urban development, many Korean were exacted compulsory labor, a spacial share of expenses and the tax collections by local government. But, Korean were treated warmly and relatively ignored in the process of a policy.
In conclusion, the shaping of Kimchen urban landscape in the early 20th century is directly or indirectly influenced Japanese colonial policy.
