The purpose of this study is to categorize the fields of urban and regional planning research, and, based on the categorized fields, to comparatively analyze the research trends found in the articles of the Journal of Korea Planners Association, the Journal of The City Planning Institute of Japan(Papers on City Planning), and the Journal of American Planners Association(JAPA). By so doing, this study attempts to envision the appropriate direction of research in urban and regional planning for the 21st century that marks the new millenium.
The study shows that the eight major fields categorized from the Korean planning research can be similarly identified in the Japanese and the American studies on planning. The research trends in the 40 sub-fields indicate that more in depth studies are needed on housing quality, environment and urban risk management. the currently limited grants for planning research implies that public policy making greater financial investment in planning research is necessary to generate more active and effective research in planning.
