Ulsan is a well-known modern industrial city which has been systematically planned by the goverment authority since 1962. At the beginning of the city's existence, it had a population of 85,000 including two local fishing ports. Now the population is approaching one half million and the city has become the seventh largest city among the nation's cities. This study is to identify some related processes which might be caused by the rapid growth of population with relation to the change in industrial employment structure, agglomeration of manufacturing industries, and the development of urban residential areas. The major techniques used for analysis of the growth processes are various kinds of statistical and graphic methods which can detect the comparative interrelationships between relative variables.
The results show that the urban growth is highly related to the major construction period of the city, the allocation of labor-intensive industries such as automobile and shipbuilding rather than a protochemical industrial complex system, and the growth of the retail, wholesale, and service sector. Also, the sites of labor-intensive industries are directly related to the spatial pattern of population distribution in recent years.
