Infrastructure investments are required to sustainable economic growth. Infrastructure investments play important roles to support various kinds of economic investment activities and, eventually, contributes economic development. Adequate provision of infrastructure facilities also promotes national competitiveness as they help to reduce transportation cost and increasing economic efficiency.
This importance notwithstanding, there are only a few analytical approach which have investigated the actual effects of infrastructure investments on national economy. This study intended to do so ; it analyzes in which infrastructure investments affect investment activities and macroeconomic impacts of such investments with particular respect to domestic income, inflation, and employment.
The infrastructure sectors covered in this study ; road, rail, port, and water resource. Investments on these infrastructure sectors are hypothesized to influence economic activities and contribute to the national economy. Structural VAR model is used to estimate parameters and various test statistics.
The findings confirm and do support that infrastructure investments activate other investments and contribute to the sustainable economic growth. However, the degree to which infrastructure affect the national economy differ from one sector to another.
