The aims of height and setback regulations are to provide roads with much sunlight and air by controlling the height and bulk of a building. But, the rigidity of height and setback regulations makes restrictions to FAR(Floor Area Ratio) and the shape of buildings uniform. In this point of view, it is important to resolve the rigidity of height and setback regulations and also maintain the proper level of public health, Sky blockage ratio is a kind of performance standards. By controlling total sky blockage ratio in a lot, instead of the height and bulk of buildings, the public can achieves this flexibility. The purpose of this paper is to examine the features of sky blockage ratio and develop a mathematical model. Previous methods for calculating sky blockage ratio require 2 steps. For example, Pre-made charts(diagrams) are used for the drawing of building outlines in Waldrum Diagram and DEC(Midtown Daylight Evaluation Chart). After a drawing step, a scoring step is required for calculating sky blockage ratio. In these methods, errors can be occurred in drawing and scoring steps. So, these require much time and efforts. In this study, a mathematical approach for calculating sky blockage ratio is examined. Linear algebra is used to eliminate errors possibly occurred in drawing and scoring steps. In this paper, sky blockage ratios of 71 buildings are calculated for testing the fitness of this calculation method. This method is excellent with respect to precision and efficiency. Sky blockage ratio can be used in building height management and also in landscape management.
