The National Highways have played an important role as principal aterials by primaily serving inter-zonal traffic demand with the national expressway. However, the highways have been faced with a serious traffic congestion and delay problems, especially in the intra and near city areas. The traffic congestion problem has reached at a level of manacing even regular economic activities. Such a serious transportation problem should be solved in a short time by providing a synthetic and systematic countermeasure.
In such a circumstance, the purpose of this study was to investigate the existing transportation systems of the national highwys inside the nationwide 68 local cities, to analyze transportation problems in terms of traffic flow, operation, and facilities, and tto suggest the possible improvement alternatives for solving the transportation problems.
