The subjects of this study are all the small and medium sized cities which has come into a new limelight in this nation. They are recognized as the potential settlement unit, capable of performing important roles in promoting and spreading economic and social development across the country.
The main purposes are to development the analysis indicators based on theoretical considerations of urban growth, so that they could explain the growth potentiality of small and medium sized cities, and to examine the growth mechanism and its change of small and medium sized cities in this nation by those analysis indicators.
The results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, ten variables was considered in analyzing the growth potentiality. Second, it was analyzed that population(POP), vitality(AGE), centrality(CEN), and manufacturing(MACC) are the main variables in 1970’s while population(POP), vitality(AGE), education(EDU), centrality(CEN), manufacturing(MACC), and variety(VAR) are in 1980’s. Third, it was found out that the social increase of population could be expected under the condition of 100 thousand or more in urban population size.
