Jo Heon, Park Chun-mu and Jo Gang's righteous army did activities in Cheongju during the Period of Japanese Invasion 1592~1598. Jo Heon did not recruit soldiers in Cheongju early in May. Thus he make a move toward Gongju and Hongju, and he raised soldiers one thousands and six hundreds persons in there. He recognized the fact that Cheongju castle and Kumsan is important strategically, and he advanced on Cheongju.
Park Chun-mu advocated a justice at Bokdae-ri of Cheongju in the 4th of July. He did recruit seven hundreds soldiers who included his brothers, sons, Lee Si-bal and Han Hyeok with the assistance of a Sajoks(士族) around the country. Jo Heon, Park Chun-mu and Yeong Gyu Buddhist priest carried out concerted operations the first of August. and thus they took back a Cheongju castle in the next day.
At this time, Jo Gang also recruited righteous army and did activities in Cheongju region. Jo Gang's family line acquired powerful influence early in the Joseon dynasty. However, according as Sun-saeng was involved in the political revolt, his grandchild also was sent into exile. As a result, his family circumstances was gone downhill.
And his father, Seung-yun entered in Cheongju. Jo Gang had learned Sohak(小學) from Jeong Sa-hyeon and Song In-su and he succeeded to Kim An-guk's studies. Due to this, he developed an activity of a rural community to realize a social order through Seongnihak(性理學).
He took up a positive attitude to realize a social order through Hyangyak(鄕約) or Seowon(書院), a private school of Joseon Dynasty. In the regin of Myeongjong(明宗) eighteenth, in Hyangyak enforced by Lee Jeung-yeong, the mayor of Cheongju, Jo Gang contributed to enlighten the inhabitants of a village by playing a role like Yakjeong(約正).
Jo Gang was the first man who established Sinhangseowon(莘巷書院) with Byeon Gyeong-su and Lee Deuk-yun in the regin of Seonjo(宣祖) third and, there Gyeong Yeon, Park Hun and Song In-su were enshirned in there. He contributed to redressing customs and enlightened villagers by means of enforcing Hyangyak.
Also, by establishing Seowon, a private school of Joseon Dynasty, he formed the center of Sajoks and educated them. Although Jo Gang had produced many disciples and had been in full activity of a rural community.
Thus these were formed the foundation of social in recruit soldiers against Japanese invasion. During the Period of Japanese Invasion 1592~1598, he gathered a righteous army and then supported military supplies. Besides, he repelled Japanese soldiers in Songnyeong(松嶺), Juksan(竹山) and Ansan(安山).
A personality of Cheongju righteous army was as follows. The first, righteous army of this region advocated a justice in July generally. The second, these developed combination operations with a unit of other region.
The third, these had gathered and combined according to school as Gyeongsang-do.
