This study is to investigate the passive cooling effect of roof solar heat reduction materials(RSHRM) on the uppermost story space thermal environment in the building. Four different types of RSHRM are selected for this study and those are shading fabric, roof water spraying, gravel laying out and aluminum panel. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the selected device and acquire data for enhancing roof insulation performance by analysing passive cooling effect of each material. Summarized results of this study are as follows: 1) The indoor air temperature difference between uppermost story space and underneath story floor space is 1.6~2.0℃ without any RSHRM and it to be considered as relatively remarkable differences. 2) Passive cooling effect with solar heat gain reduction, evaporative cooling, radiation blocking and heat storage lessened indoor temperature and daily indoor temperature variation. 3) All of the four types of RSHRM lowered uppermost story air temperature. Those temperature reduction amount compared with the same location without RSHRM as follows: roof water spraying : 1.4℃, shading fabric : 0.9℃, aluminum panel and gravel laying out : 0.7℃. 4) Indoor air temperature difference between uppermost story space and underneath story floor space is varies with different type of RSHRM and the amount of temperature difference is as below. roof water spraying : 0.4℃, shading fabric : 1.0℃, aluminum panel and gravel laying out : 1.1℃, without RSHRM : 1.8℃. 5) Solar heat reduction performance of the gravel laying out showed more improvement as with thicker gravel laying out layer and those effect is diminished rapidly after a certain thickness.
