This study is to investigate the passive cooling method to block the flowing amount of heat to be streamed through roof in summer and to evaluate the effects of evaporative cooling by roof water spraying. Spraying water on roof surface of the existing structures and measuring the effects to control the rising of indoor temperature according to the roof water spraying, this study evaluates the effectiveness of the roof water spraying system. This study provides the optimum design specification for roof insulation and the fundamental data for passive cooling design. The results of this study are summarized as follows. 1) As the experimental results to measure the effects of roof water spraying in the closed space, the indoor temperature at the top floor by roof water spraying exhibited 0.7∼1.0℃ lower temperature than at the top floor without roof water spraying. It was observed that the roof water spraying led to the effects to control the rising of indoor temperature to the degree of 39∼43%. 2) High temperature difference of 1.8∼2.3℃ between the top and inter-story due to the poor roof insulation was measured. 3) By the analysis of indoor thermal comfort index, the roof water spraying exhibited the improved indoor thermal environment of MRT 0.6∼0.9℃, PMV 0.05∼0.31, ET<SUP>*</SUP> 0.3∼1.0℃ and SET<SUP>*</SUP> 0.3∼1.0℃. 4) It was illustrated that the roof water spraying to use evaporative cooling should be the passive cooling method to be able to effectively control the rising of indoor temperature.
