The newspaper Dae-han-min-bo played an important role on the changing concept of ‘So-seol’ in the years of modern enlightenment. The tradition of the serial novel on newspapers was settled firmly in Dae-han-min-bo. Dae-han-min-bo didn’t put any article that was not newly written, on the section of ‘So-seol’. Nowadays it’s common, but other newspapers such as Dae-han-mae-il-shin-bo, Kyeong-hyang-shin-mun, Je-kuk-shin-mun in those days of early enlightenment often put articles such as old fictions, fables and narratives on the section of ‘So-seol’. And the names of authors were written on the most ‘So-seol’s of Dae-han-min-bo, though it’s the pen names. We should remember that many writings in those days hadn’t the name of author. And every ‘So-seol’ of Dae-han-min-bo had close relations with the actual matters of that age. All such features show that the editors of that paper had deep interest in ‘the originality of So-seol’.
On the other hand, one of the specific features of the section of ‘So-seol’ in Dae-han-min-bo is the writings using a dialogue or a debate. This formed a great contrast with the inclination to the biographical writings of Dae-han-mae-il-shin-bo. These two modes of writings were the distinctive features of the age of early enlightenment in Korea. And these could be the new, unique forms of Korean novel, ‘So-seol’. Though the probability didn’t realized in history, their efforts to cultivate a new region of ‘So-seol’ have a significant meaning.
