?ich’?n (1055~1101) from his early age had deeply immersed himself in the study of Buddhist scriptures and commentaries. After returning from Sung China in 1086, he established the Directorate for Buddhist Scriptures. He also published treatises and commentaries found in Sung, Liao, and Japan as well as in Koryo. At this period, although he began to compile the New Catalogue of Buddhist Sectarian Writings(NCBSW). he did not complete it. It was the reason why Kim Pusik did not think of ?ich’?n as the compiler of the NCBSW.
In order to establish an independent Buddhist Sect, one needed to satisfy several requirements: construction of an independent monk ranks, system of selecting monks, Scriptures to be relied upon, annotation by the famous monk, genealogy of the scholastic monk, and buddhist commandments. Here, the role of ?ich’?n in establishing Chontae sect was only limited; he assisted to build a Chontae temple named Kuk-chungsa, and took the role as the head priest of the temple. However, selecting of monks through examinations, one of the crucial requirements to satisfy in order to be considered as the founder of an independent Buddhist Sect, was entitled to Ik-jong, the student of ?ich’?n.
