In this manuscript, the process of becoming abstract of ‘법’, which means method, reason or propriety, attitude or habit, rightfulness and guess in modern Korean language, was retroactively researched in connection with the meaning in the dictionary. Therefore, it is understood that (1)'reason or propriety' is derived from the meaning of the abstract reason and the standing rule of persons' conduct; (2)'attitude or habit' is from the meaning of the embodied rule; further to (3)'rightfulness and guess', in relation to religion, rightfulness is derived from ‘법’ or the reason of Confucianism, and guess is from Buddhism respectively. By this process, becoming abstract of each meaning of ‘법’ is graded as follows: first, 'rightfulness and guess'; second, 'reason or propriety'; third, 'attitude of habit'; fourth, 'method'. Thereupon, it was confirmed that according to the grade of becoming abstract, there shows a difference in limitations.
As the result of such a study, it is pointed out that there finds difficulty in looking upon the '법' as a dependence noun when it is applied to the meaning of 'method' in a sentence. That's because it is possible to verify the family relation with the original meaning except by the extremely abstract meaning of 'rightfulness and guess'. Thereby, it is concluded that the '법' in modern Korean language doesn't complete being grammaticalized as a dependence noun, but is in the process of becoming grammaticalized from a content noun into a dependence noun.
By this time, the process of being grammaticalized from a content noun into a dependence noun has been discussed focusing on being closely connected with 'the process of becoming abstract in meaning'. For the purpose of bringing this discuss to perfection, it is recognized that we should simultaneously study the grammaticalization with syntactic. Herewith, the next subject will be a semantics study on the process of grammaticalization of other dependence nouns, suffix and etc.
