The purpose of this article is to consider in detail the meaning of popularization of the New Novels, free from the established discussions which tent to grade by dichotomy the enlightenment and the popularity. The appearance of the popularity in the New Novels is closely connected with the discovery of popular reality and an appearance of the literary market and the new consuming public. Also, the internal confusions which had result from a unreliability of the modern world and the fierce competitions of the desires during the modern age had played a prominent part in the appearance of the popularity. In connection with this background, most of the melodramas have a fixed scheme of good and evil and a desire of the stability of the world which has the structure of order-confusion-order.
To begin in earnest a control on the literature by the literary market is the external factor in a decline of the New Novels, to neglect the search of the meaning of the modern life, although the New Novels insisted the modern enlightenment, is the internal factor. The New Novels were apt to repeat the similar popular narrations because the point of view of narrator in itself had not fully internalized the modernity. The New Novels had simply alternated an obeying of the ideology of the modern enlightenment with an obeying of the popular tastes, in pushing out of narrative space of the New Novels the tensions arising from conflict between the new culture and the old culture.
