Ttakjibon is popular novel books with color printed front cover published from late 1900s. These books were modern publications printed with western type printing press imported to educate and enlighten the people in modernization period before Japanese Annexation of Korea. Front Covers of Ttakjibon had various printed pictures to attract the readers who liked stories. This is the first commercial book cover design in Modern Korea and Ttakjibon is the first book produced as modern commodity and mass cultural goods.
The cover images of Ttakjibon is printed by intense colors, so the word ‘Ttakji’ that means a color printed small paper is attached to these images. The word ‘Ttakjibon’ implies that taste of Ttakjibon reader was thought as low level but this evaluation came into being after high literature started to be written by intellectuals who returned from studying abroad in 1920s.
The front covers of Ttakjibon were designed with pictures painted with traditional style by painters who obtained traditional painting skill. A signature of painter was inserted into picture as traditional convention in 1910s but in 1920s the signature of painter could not be on front cover because Ttakjibon was regarded as low grade literature. Ttakjibon’s cover picture described a narrative space that represented the whole story and attracted readers into the story.
In the Images of front covers of Ttakjibon of 1920-30s were women called New Women who had acquired education and pursued modern liberal love. In 1930s, Ttakjibon cover image of romance story showed frame structure similar to contemporary movie scene. Ttakjibon cover images gives us a useful example of modern popular culture and possibility to constitute a totality of visual culture outside of fine art.
