Objectives : This study aimed to evaluate the influence of schizophrenia on intelligence by comparing the current and the premorbid intelligence of the schizophrenia patients.
Methods : The subjects were 262 schizophrenia patients in admission. The author have the results of Korean Wechsler Adult intelligence Scale(K-WAIS) as current intelligence and the induced intelligence from the ageeducation specific means of K-WAIS standardzation samples as premorbid intelligence. The patients were divided 4 groups by the percentile of current intelligence(current intelliqence/premorbid intelligence×100) in descending order. The lowest group(impairment group) and the highest group(maintenance group) were selected and evaluated in terms of the current intelligence and clinical characteristics.
Results : 1) The differences of current intelligence between two groups were more prominent on the verbal items than the performance items, especially on the vocabulary and the comprehension.
2) The mean percentiles of the current intelligence were 67.2±8.2% in the impairment group and 98.4±5.6% in the maintenance group(p＜.05).
3) The dosages of antipsychotics showed a reverse correlation with the digit span of K -WAIS in the impairment group(r=-.25, p＜.05) and the digit symbol in the maintenance group(r=-.30, p＜.05).
4) The impairment group had earlier onset of schizophrenia, less kinds of deusion, more negative symptoms, longer duration of educationthan the maintenance group.
Conclusion : The result showed that schizophrenia affect the intelligence by many different degrees, which suggested the heterogenecity of schizophrenia. The nurtural verbal intelligence had more impairment than the natural performance intelligence did by schizophrenia. The maintained intelligence might have a supportive effect on the formation of delusion and aggressive behaviours and a resoluble effect on the negative symptoms.
