This study investigates the role of different owners in determining the corporate board composition in Korea. Based on the agency theory we divided the ownership groups into controlling insider block holders and non-controlling outside block holders to demonstrate their different role in shaping the composition of corporate boards. Empirical results suggest that controlling inside block holders resist the introduction of outside directors due to their monitoring role. In contrast, outside block holders' ownership leads to introduction of more outside directors to monitor the inside controlling block holders. The results provide additional evidence on the agency problem associated with controlling block holders in countries with concentrated ownership and weak corporate governance. This study also adds to the recent literature on impact of ownership structure on the evolution of board structure.
