In this thesis, I explored how the process of Su Dong-po's mental state is reflected
in his two works, qian hou-chibifu by studying its formal character, that is, expressive technique intensively.
This study is divided into four parts as follows: First, the reason of Su Dong-po's exile to Huang Zhou due to "wu tai shian", Secondly, the background of writing qian hou-chibifu. Thirdly, the beauty of the form of qian hou-chibifu. Lastly, the comparison of qian hou-chibifu. Through this study, I examined the character of form and contents of Su Dong-po's qian hou-chibifu, First, I searched the author's view of life through the analysis of two works' contents. Next, by analyzing the character of the form of two works I studied the process of the author's mental state.
Of course it is not enough to study an author's one or two great masterpieces in order to discuss his view of life. it will be possible when a full analysis of his whole works as well as his family background, milieu, and the times in which he lived is done. However, in this thesis I got a glimpse of one aspect of the author's writing technique by analyzing his representative two works.
In conclusion SuShi was able to express his own idea of what is the harmony of truth and beauty in art through the formal technique of qian hou-chibifu.
