In this paper, I try to analyse The Mill on the Floss(1860) of George Eliot from a few concepts of Zizek. At first, Maggie Tulliver does not answer to "Che Vuoi,"(What do you want?) because she is a hysterical subject who cannot obey to the role of an ideal woman in the 19th-century. Secondly, St. Ogg's cannot be a harmonious society because of the hostile social division. But ideological fantasy constructs a vision of a society which is not divided by the hostile division and which has an organic and complementary relation. In brief, ideological fantasy conceals a fact that a harmonious society does not exist. As a result, Maggie is represented both as an obstacle to the social harmony and the cause of social antagonism through "displacement" and "condensation" in the construction of ideological fantasy. Thirdly, Maggie's drowning seems not to reach the ethics of the Real in comparison with the death of Antigone who seeks for her unconditional demand by burying the dead body of her brother in defiance of Creon's order.
Thus I analyse the representation of Maggie through "Che Vuoi", and hysterical subject, ideological fantasy, "displacement" and "condensation" in the construction of ideological fantasy, and Maggie's drowning. This approach is an interesting project because the twenty first-century concept of Zizek is applied to this 19th-century text well. This is the present meaning of this text and the advanced consciousness of Eliot beyond her times. This analysis gives the better understanding of this text than the feminist reading and the reading in light of Bourdieu's "symbolic violence".
