This study examines women and vocations in George Eliot’s Mill on the Floss. In this story, Eliot explores the limitations in education, class, and vocation that are imposed on the female protagonist, Maggie Tulliver. Eliot also shows how a woman’s desire for a vocation beyond that of acting as a domestic angel is frustrated. Although some critics argue that the author’s feminist concerns are not clearly addressed in this novel, Eliot faithfully depicts her contemporaries and addresses the problems they face in conjunction with their aspirations for and frustrations over their vocations. In Mill on the Floss, Eliot presents Maggie as a middle class woman imprisoned in a patriarchal society. Driven by her intellectual ardor and extraordinary passion for vocation, Maggie strives to become an accomplished female in a male-dominated society. However, her boundless vocational aspiration ultimately drives her to death. Many feminist critics tend to overlook the historical, cultural, and social restrictions imposed upon those Victorian women. Eliot in this novel, however, successfully represents women’s frustration in their quests for vocation in Victorian gender ideology, which is viewed as a feminist achievement in Victorian literature.
