Harold Pinter's The Homecoming seems to have little to do with political implication. The audience become involved with the competitive verbal duals of sexuality in an old house in North London. Foregrounding the familial and sexual conflicts, the play organizes and revolves contradictions between the residual and the emergent. The residual stands for the old generation, the male power, or the old empire, and the emergent for the new generation, the female power, or the new empire.
The strategic direction of the play makes the audience feel strange, because it develops unbelievable happenings in the familial relations on a very cold stage. This ambivalence of the familial selves implies the postcolonial background which overdetermines the structure of British people's feelings and Anglo-American 'Special Relationship.' After the World War Ⅱ, the nuclear missile becomes not only an absolute object of desire, but a dominant symbol of manipulative power.
The past and the residual are organized and signified by the present and the emergent, and, in turn, reorganize and resignify the present and the emergent. The signification of this ambivalence dismantles and decentres the audience, thus, provokes them to resignify themselves as well as the socio-historical unevenness of contradictions. The familial special relationship in the play The Homecoming analogically expresses the Special Relationship between English-speaking peoples and between nuclear powers in the era of decolorization and sexual liberation.
