Pinter's plays have been understood in the context of political background. And plays and games by means of language and violence, in his plays, are classified as his postmodern strategies which are nicknamed 'pinteresque.' So some suggest that he cannot use ritualistic pattern containing spiritual and sincere purpose. And this approach is not harmonized with his title as a political dramatist.
However the rituals have had delicate political significance in the anthropological sense. Especially initiation rite and vegetation rite have been performed under the political purpose. The society lead the initiators to conform to the tradition and the social values by experiencing the suffering of the ritual process. Pinter twists and reverses the ritualistic pattern to parody the modern society. Stanley and Davies, in The Birthday Party and Caretaker, show the process of initiation rite. But they try to evade the courage and the patience of the classical initiators. Stanley ran away from the society from his fear of the suffering which the society had pressed him to accept. Davies conspires to hide in the junk room of Aston instead of facing the risk of the long journey which can prove his identity. We can find Pinter's efforts to parody the modern people through Stanley and Davies.
The Birthday Party and Homecoming present us with the pattern of Dionysian fertility rite. Meg and Ruth play their roles as earth-mother. They initiate immature males such as Stanley and Joey. Meg seduces him to make love with her as a mature woman. Stanley fails to develop to maturity, on the other hand he is taken away to Monty by strong father-figures, which means his victimization by cruel society. Ruth, in Homecoming, becomes the earth-mother of all males in Teddy's family. Rude males struggle to live with her, and she chooses to be their lover-mother rather than wife of Teddy. By doing so, she shows her hatred of hollow civilization. But her games with males lose the dignity of traditional ritual, which implies the parody of modem world.
