David Mamet is noted for his treatment of language as a central theme. Dramatic language is no longer considered as a transparent carrier of information shedding light on plot, character, and theme. By drawing attention to itself, it is both a structural device and thematic focus. Mamet is preoccupied with the ways on which language becomes character and patterns of speech reflect ways of behaving in his plays, especially Glengarry Glen Ross, one of his powerful plays.
Glengarry Glen Ross is a play about salesmen's flowing speech and the survival of the fittest in a competitive world. They must become experts in linguistic technique in a brutally competitive society. So long as he can keep his narrative flowing and uninterrupted, he is able to feel, at least momentarily, safe. Through the patterns of his words such as lies, browbeatings, stonewalling, spiel, and evasions, he can manipulate and achieve what he wants. Roma's mesmerizing monologue in the company of the inarticulate Lingk; Levene's poetic and almost orgasmic evocation of a great sales; and the brilliant entrapment of Aaronow into criminal culpability by his colleague Moss are the best examples of Mamet's linguistic invention.
Language in his plays motivates and reinforces actors' behaviors. It influences the whole flow of the play and its mood. Characters are replaced by their words. They express their feelings or thoughts through their words or silence. Language also results in building main structure and themes. These are not expressed by the content of words, but by their rhythm, speed, vituperation, and invective.
Anne Dean comments, "through Mamet's imaginative and original use of idiomatic speech, Mamet utilizes every word to forward the action, depict character, establish mood and add to the overall shape of his work." Like her comment, language in his works plays the roles of dramatic action, character, plot and mood. In conclusion, language means theme, plot, character, structure, and action in Glengarry Glen Ross.
