This study start to distinguish ‘neo’ and ‘geudui’, the second personal pronoun in the fifteenth century, in that they are in response to ‘hara’ which is applied a man of low rank or equal position. Though they designate the same object in the same age, they should have their own unique functions. So, this study is possible through a process of deduction.
In this context, this study tries to seek differences in ‘relation’. So I come to a conclusion that ‘neo’ denotes an intimate object and ‘geudui’ indicates an unfamiliar object. In order to prove this idea, I look over their examples so that I can find their point of sameness. I also intend to grasp a concept of “relation” at the same time.
After that, I analyze the examples of ‘neo’ and ‘geudui’, so I define the former the second personal pronoun which has intimacy, emotion and public nature and the latter which has politeness and public nature. ‘neo’ designates an intimate object and is used in private conversation, whereas ‘geudui’ is used in public conversation and denotes the object which should be treated politely.
