This study examines the performance implications of the fit between strategy and contextual variables at the business unit level in the context of US multinational corporations. In line with the growing importance of integrating formulation and implementation perspectives in contingency strategy research, this study adopts a systems approach when examining the performance consequences of the fit between business unit (SBU) strategy and relevant contextual variables in the context of multinational corporations (MNCs). Three contextual variables selected for the purpose of this research are environmental uncertainty, level of managerial bonus, and corporate-SBU decentralization. Miles and Snow's (1978) typology is used to conceptualize SBU strategy. Analysis of data on a sample of 50 SBUs which belong to US multinational corporations shows that the systems fit between SBU strategy and selected contextual variables is positively related to SBU performance. Results also indicate that any individual bivariate fit between SBU strategy and each contextual variable does not lead to a statistically significant effect on SBU performance. Research implications for the results of this study are discussed.
