This article showed the first approach to clear up the symbolic system of Korea embedded in the discourse of post-war Japanese literature. In this article, we first made up clear the Korean images included in the imaginative geography, and from that image, we try to explore the psychological bases of Japanese minds which made up one pivot of their self-portraits since the World War II.
Post-war Japanese people made themselves free from the matter of responsibilities of war crimes by making images of Korean as a dirty, sly, hateful, arrogant, villain, and ugly. For those exploration, I chose Hayashi Seiko's The Hungry Revolutions as a example text that showed the images of Korean and of Korean people for post-war Japanese people. In this novel, Korean images were expressed as a double layer for a symbolic system of Korea for post-war Japanese people with the experiences of the writer as a repatriated person after the defeat of World War II as follows:
First, Hayashi repeatedly showed the images which was composed at the ages of May-chee Revolution period and of colonial period. From this repetition, he justified their colonial government of Korea in the early 20th century.
Second, though he justified the colonial age, Hayashi also criticized that by the attack for the subject of the colonial government. This approaches made effects for diluting the responsibilities of Japanese people as a whole by concentrating on the specific forces.
And the third, Hayashi revealed his desire as a existence of the repatriated. He had an unsatisfied feeling for the bankruptcy of ideal for Sakagami by the illiterate Korean people and the severe colonial controlling for them, therefore he tried to ward off to be the target of criticism after the War.
From these approaches, we may confirm the fact that colonial government of Japan were actually done by the Japanese as a whole though, as in Hayashi's novel, the Japanese literary works which showed the Korean images by the Japanese writer showed the criticism for the Japanese colony of Korea, And if they lacked the self-reflection as a colonial member, finally their trials were concluded as a justification for themselves.
