This study examines the American scholars' views of the Korean issues from 1945 to 1950's analyzing the articles appearing in Far Eastern Quarterly, Far Eastern Survey, and Pacific Affairs which published scholarly articles on the Far East.
Many articles relating to Korean issues were published in 1946 and in 1948. They dealt with the Korean issues such as the Korean situation under the American military Government, American occupation policies in Korea, the first Korean election, land redistribution in Korea, and the future of the new Korean government, etc. The authors of those articles were the experts who researched Korea in American universities and then worked with Korean affairs at the Dept. of State and the American military government in Korea. Arthur C. Bunce and George M. McCune are representative.
They had friendly eyes toward Korean. They believed Koreans can maintain an independence nation. George M. McCune criticized the American occupation polices in Korea. He blamed the United States for the division of the Korean peninsula. He urged the highest levels of governments in the United States and the Soviet Union review the Korean situation and undertake to correct the faults of previous policy. His view of the Korean government was negative.
Their articles were based on not only their experiences in Korea but also the elaborate analysis on the historical materials. In this aspect, their analyses on Korean issues can be regarded as making progress.
