Christian ministry, to be effective, has to meet people at the level of their struggles. The same can be said for the teaching ministry of the church. So it is always important for Christian pastors and educators to possess an accurate and informed understanding of the context of ministry and the people they serve and educate. As an attempt to enhance the understanding of Korean American pastors and Christian educators, this paper provides a socio-cultural analysis of the Korean American experience, with a special focus on the family and church.
Despite its relatively short immigrant history, the post-l965 Korean American immigrants have achieved remarkable economic and academic success, for which they have come to earn the recognition-with other selected Asian American immigrant groups-of being a "model minority" in the American society. As for the reasons of their relatively rapid success in spite of many adverse conditions that most Korean immigrants had to face, experts have pointed to the high level of educational background among many Korean American immigrants, the dominant pattern of immigration in familial units rather than individuaI, and an active religious participation among Korean American Immigrants. However, despite their highly recognized success, an in-depth study of the Korean American family life and church experience indicates that, underneath the glare of their success stories, many Korean American families and individuals suffer from various social and psychological problem. From the perspective of church ministry, these findings should be taken seriously as a backdrop with which to reflect critically upon the present practice of Korean American ministry to families and individuals. In light of these findings, Korean American churches should evaluate their practice of ministry and seek to develop forms/paradigms of ministry that can effectively address these issues and problems, thereby ensuring a hopeful future for the Korean American church and family.
