This paper examines the representation of the women of property in the Victorian novel focusing on the relations between gender, class and property in Thomas Hardy's Far from the Madding Crowd and The Woodlanders. The rural community in which Hardy's women of property act as a landowner is not a simple pastoral community, but a complex and changing one in which class and economic relations are important. The central romance is related with work, money, and hopes of upward mobility. Hardy relates the representation of the women of property to those issues of class and separation within the community.
The self-willed women of property, Bathsheba Everdene and Felice Charmond, are troubled by and often trapped by feminity. They are represented in particular ways in both texts: Hardy's male narrators describe their conflicts in the ambivalent point of view which reflects the contemporary ideology of gender and property. Hardy explores the problems of their independence and sexual authority within a complex network of class and gender relations in the Wessex community. Hardy's conceptions of female autonomy in which economically independent women battle with Victorian gender ideologies are vividly represented in the particular positions of the women of property in Wessex.
