This paper examines the Victorian new woman in relation to the nineteenth-century cultural context focusing on the representation of Sue Bridehead in Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure. The new woman of the late nineteenth-century is the central figure of the literary culture of the late Victorian period and contains within herself the Victorian's fascination/fear of female assertiveness and desire.
Sue Bridehead is the climax of the new woman who struggles for her creative and independent life in the late nineteenth-century. Sue challenges the traditional role of woman and Victorian ideology of marriage. The structure of her conflicts shows the complex relation between the problem of sexuality, liberation of woman and the Victorian cultural code on the female sexuality. Her tragedy represents the contradiction of the Victorian new woman and the difficulties of living up to the ideals of the contemporary feminist theories.
Sue is represented through the multiple points of view, and various modes of narration. The various experiments in narration dramatize successfully the mrelation between the liberation of woman and gender ideology of the late Victorian period. Hardy effectively reveals the effect of the contemporary cultural code on the feminity with various modes of representation. Hardy’s attempts at the redefinition of feminity challenges the Victorian gender ideology and undermines the ideological basis of the contemporary discourses on the feminity.
