American Notes has been hardly dealt in Dickens Studies. It is thought that American Notes gives no help to Dickens's career because of its insufficient art quality and that it reveals Dickens's narrow nationalism. But American Notes has important meaning as historical material. This travel book shows the subtle tension between England which had control on America as colony, and America which grappled political freedom from England. Especially American Notes is not about America which is discussed in the myth frame of redemption land for Old World, but it is about actual America where the tough hard lives are struggling and the monstrous slavery is prevalent.
Critics often have thought that Dickens gave partial and unjust criticism on America. This paper is an attempt to give an impartial view on American Notes. American Notes is partial on the negative criticism on the American's crude character and American wild nature. But it is just on the severe criticism on slavery regardless of American's hard reaction. And this paper tries to show the unjust parts of American Notes are partly resulted from Dickens's revolts and hatred on America through the copyrights conflict. This paper can reach an just evaluation on American Notes by using both close reading of text and biographical approach.
