The history of the antislavery movement in the British Atlantic world can be categorized into three phases: the spread of the antipathy toward slavery(1730s~70s), the transformative change of the antislavery sentiment into the political conviction (1780s~90s) and the political movement for the abolition of the slavery trade (1790~1807). Throughout the eighteenth century, the nature of the abolitionist movement changed and two events were of great importance in this process: the Great Awakening and the American Revolution. The former established the transatlantic communication channel for the spread of the antislavery sentiment into the Atlantic world while the latter contributed to creating an atmosphere of tension, in which antislavery sentiment became transformed into moral conviction.
Each period of the abolitionist movement raises three questions and for a comprehensive understanding of the history of the British antislavery movement, these should be answered: how values, perceptions and beliefs hostile to the slave trade and slavery developed and spread in the British Atlantic world; how these ideas transformed into a political ideology and practical actions for social reforms; and how abolitionists eventually achieved the abolition of the slave trade and the emancipation of slaves.
Many studies have answered the second and third questions but interest in the first has been limited; previous studies’ focus on this issue has shifted from the abolitionists’ achievements to the transformation of antislavery sentiment into the antislavery ideology or abolitionism. However, in studies by scholars over the past decades, questions about the origins of the antipathy to the slave trade have remained unexplained.
This study attempts to find a proper answer to the question of the origin of the antislavery sentiment through a more comprehensive interpretation of the developmental process of the transatlantic evangelical network. For this purpose, this essay has two objectives; the forging of the transatlantic evangelical network and the spread of antislavery sentiment through this communication channel in the Atlantic world. It will also analyze the correlation between two processes.
