New Historicism has become an influential method of interpreting literary works in the last couple of decades. It originated from the attempts to interpret Renaissance dramas among the multiple forms of writing in that period. To do so, the New Historicists uncover hidden anecdotes that could have influenced the dramas directly or indirectly. They have provided readers with more diverse perspectives, social, political or cultural, by way of revealing other forms of writing than literature. This approach seems to have been convincing in consideration of the dramas’ possible function as a medium to affect their spectators socially or politically. Given the fact that poetry is a genre of a much simpler structure than drama, however, we need to be more careful in using the same method when we read Wordsworth’s poems: poetry is not so much influential politically or socially to its readers as the dramas are to their spectators.
Unlike the Renaissance New Historicists, the Romantic ones are more interested in revealing how a poet disguises his/her ideology in poetry rather than uncovering anecdotes that could have possibly influenced the poet. In accordance with Foucault’s power theory, which argues that every human being is subject to power, they believe that a poet regards poetry as a means of sustaining or reinforcing power. Accordingly, they see Wordsworth’s poems as the result of the poet’s covering up of the social ideology in that he did not directly criticize the cruel reality in his poems. They turn a blind eye to his poems where he deals with the pains of the suffering people because they are predetermined to put context before text in the process of interpretation. As Theodor Adorno suggests, we need to treat literary works in a dialectical way between text and context in order to do justice to Wordsworth’s poetry.
