1910s' short stories written by Korean students studying in Japan, are classified into two groups. The one is 'the stories that are contracted Sinsoseol(新小說: the transitive novels in 1900s that is the civilized and enlightened age)', and the other is 'the stories that described the writer's inner mind'. In the former, these stories were similar to Sinsoseol(新小說) in view of storytelling and subject matters. Both took the difficulties of love-marriage between men and women as their subject matters. But most of the heros and heroins in Sinsoseol(新小說) gained the eternal happiness after they overcome their difficult situation, meanwhile in 1910s' short stories they mostly died. The disease and prostitution hurt the characters' body and in many cases, they result in deaths.
On the other hand, in the latter group, the narrators that were regarded as the stories' writers expressed their solitary and melancholy mentality. Furthermore, these narrators often felt the impulse to kill themselves. They suffered loneliness during studying abroad and were disappointed in love, finally they didn't want to live any more.
These impulse of death and suicide that appeared in 1910s' short stories is originated in the experience of studying abroad. The student-writers went to Japan and saw their fatherland colonialized by the Japanese imperialism with their own eyes. They were distressed about their tragic situation of the colonized nation and criticized the old generation and contradicted the Confucian morals. In addition, they had an ambivalence of love and hatred to fatherland. Thus they suffered melancholia and had no hesitation in revealing the impulse to suicide which had been considered undutiful.
