The Second Vatican Council has promulgated first of all the 'Constitution on sacred Liturgy'(Sacrosanctum Concilium), in which the cultural adaptation in various countries was recommended. We call the cultural adaptation of the Liturgy in diverse words, that are inculturation, acculturation, transculturation, indigenization, contextualization etc.
The cultural adaptation is an asking from the mystery of the Incarnation that must be continued to be realized in the present situations of various countries. This mystery of the Incarnation is the theological principle for the cultural adaptation. This mystery is a key to understand the mission of the Church which accomplish the work of salvation of Jesus Christ.
The unique and unrepeatable historical event is realized in this time and here through the Church, and the Christ is present with vivacity in the Church and the world. Though it is a historical event that Jesus Christ became a human, his mysteries are vivified by his presence in cultural and social conditions of peoples. Therefore the cultural adaptation is not an option, but a theological order to be realized from the mystery of the Incarnation.
The cultural adaptations permitted by the Second Vatican Council are presented in the revised rituals. These are to be done by the episcopal conferences. The cases to be adapted according to the proper cultures by the episcopal conference are vast.
The cultural adaptations by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Korea are found in the Pastoral Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea, the Supplementary Canon Law of the Catholic Church in Korea and Korean Rituals. The first was recognized in 1995. 1. 23 and the second in 2002. 6. 25 by the Holy See.
In a word, the Catholic Church in Korea did not her best to appreciate korean culture. In consequence, she could not introduce or reflect korean cultural essences in the catholic rites. It is fortunate that the Catholic Church in Korea have proper rite for the dead of her own.
Now our church has many experts in various parts. I hope that they have many opportunities to study and discuss about the cultural adaptation.
Of course, the cultural adaptation is not work of scholar alone. That is progressed by requirement of cultural impact from cultural difference. And the theological adaptation must precede the liturgical adaptation.
We need not to forget that the liturgical adaptation is not to be completed at once, but to be advanced in the course of time, and that is not to go back to the practices of old.
