This study contributes to characterizing the actualities and properties of genocide in the Korean War, by investigating the remains of civilians exhumed at Yeoyang-ri, Jinjeon-myeon, Masan-si, Gyeongnam. Throughout the Korean War, a lot of civilians had been killed. Of these civilians, hundreds of thousands of people ware massacred, who were supposed to be left-wingers due to their involvement in Gukminbodoyeonmaeng. Furthermore, the bereaved families of these people could not claim the investigation of the massacre due to the bondage branding them as left-wingers. Thus, the study on this matter has been extremely depressed.
The exhumation had been carried out for 2 months from May to June 2004. As a result, the remains of 163 persons, various articles, and military items like empty cartridges were gathered. Facts revealed by the exhumation and testimony by people in Yeoyang-ri and by some survivors from the massacre are summed up as follows.
First, the genocide in Yeoyang-ri occurred on July 21, 1950, and 180 civilians were killed. They were residents in the West areas of Gyeongnam around Jinju, and had been confined in Jinju Jail for a couple of days at that time.
Second, most of them were involved in Bodoyeonmaeng, but had already been exempted and led common life with their family. Especially, the majority were farmers in the countryside.
Third, as is the case with other genocides of Bodoyeonmaeng members, the genocide of civilians in Yeoyang-ri is an affair in which the government's public power killed its people. This affair resulted from the particular situation in which the stated faced such a national crisis as war, and the ideologies of the left and right wings extremely opposed to each other.
Fourth, this occasion of exhumation was just one for the whole interment, but can be a clue to the genocide. In order to explicate the whole revelation of the affair, we should not only exhume the remains, but also use other possible means like gathering evidence from the bereaved families and witnesses, and checking out relevant documents, etc.
