Thin film technology and the related technologies have great influences on microelectronic components applicable for both of commercial and military applications. This technology is, particularly, vital to innovate the overall performance and reliability of critical optoelectronic components, microwave and millimeter wave devices, miniature sensors utilized in the advanced military eqipments such as precision-guided missiles, telecommunication systems, radars, detection and warning systems. In this review, thin film technology has been discussed in terms of developmental trends, potential applications and future prospects. Finally, a R & D scheme is proposed to enhance the national capability for this important technology.
