본 논문에서는 지난 40여 년간 이룩된 광통신 기술의 눈부신 발전 과정을 되돌아보고 예상되는 향후 발전 방향에 대하여 기술하였다. 특히, 초고속 대용량 광전송 시스템의 발전 과정에서 핵심적인 역할을 수행한 기술들을 역사적 관점에서 정리하였다. 본 논문은 광통신 분야에 새로이 입문하는 젊은 공학도들을 위하여 작성된 것이다.
