This study aimed at the review of the writings on the history of Red-ology(Hongxueshi) during twentieth-century. Red-ology(the scholarship on Dream of the Red Chamber) is the study on Hongloumeng. That includes the researches on the text's structure, character, theme, narrative technique, history of Red-ology, author and critiques etc. It has been one of the outstanding scholarships since the beginning of 20th-century. Especially, the history of Red-ology has been researched and written by many scholars during last fifty years. The history of Red-ology plays an important role in understanding modern Chinese intellectual history, because the famous thinker, critics and politicians like Cai Yuanpei(蔡元培), Wang Guowei(王國維), Lu Xun(魯迅), Hu Shi(胡適), Yu Pingbo(兪平伯), Gu Jiegang(顧길剛), Zheng Zhenduo(鄭振鐸), Chen Yinke(陳寅恪), Mao Zedong(毛澤東) etc in modern Chinese history studied and got criticized on Dream of the Red Chamber. This study introduced the writings on the history of Red-ology from both the mainland of China and the overseas. The writings on the history of Red-ology in the mainland of China, especially the beginning of 1980, had the perspectives of politic-oriented. Since 1990', the trend has been changed. Some writings began to have the pure academic perspectives on the history of Red-ology. In the meantime, the scholars in the overseas had been doing researched on the history of Red-ology in terms of scientific perspectives. Among them, the representatives are the writings of Yu Yingshi(餘英時) and Chen Qinghao(陳慶浩). Also, Louise P. Edwards provided the excellent example of the research on the history of Red-ology. In the 21st-century, Red-ology has to keep the cultural perspectives combined the research of the historical evidence with the literary critique on Dream of the Red Chamber. In addition to, the internatioanl network on the resources and materials of Dream of the Red Chamber have to be organized. The history of Red-ology also should be interpreted more productively and efficiently in the context of each historical period.
