The purpose of this paper is to analyze and compare the production structures of Korean manufacturing industries in five sub-regions, which include the five main cities. For this goal, this paper sets up the cost-minimization scheme for the firm behavior, derives the optimization conditions, estimates the derive cost share equations, estimates Allen-Uzawa partial elasticities of substitution between factor inputs, and estimates the cross elasticities of factor demanded. The production factors are capital, labor, energy, and raw materials. The data used in this study are pooled data, which cover the period of 1979 to 1990 for each region; thus, there are enough degrees of freedom for estimation. The major sources of data are『Report on Minning and Manufacturing Survey』,『Economic Statistics Yearbook』, and『Financial Statements Statistics』.
The major results in this study are follows. First, the most of estimated coefficients (particularly the dummy variables which are opposed to denote the regional differences) possess very high asymptotic t-values, so the estimation results could be evaluated as good in terms of fitting the data. Second, the average estimated Allen-Uzawa partial elasticities of substitution between labor and capital is about 2.3, which means the strong substitution relationship of these two production factors. In the regional perspective, the estimated partial elasticities of substitution between labor and capital of Kwangju-Chonnam area is relatively small; this result implies the fact that the share of small-sized firms in this area is relatively higher than other areas, and so the manufacturing firms in this area has experienced the difficulties in borrowing the capital. On the other hand, the estimated partial elasticities between all other factors showed negative values, which implies the complement relationships. Third, almost all of the estimated cross elasticities show the same implications with those of the estimated results of partial elasticities of substitution. Finally, the estimated partial elasticities of substitution between labor and capital is highest in 1985 in all five regions; those between labor and raw materials, and between capital and raw materials showed decreasing patterns; those between labor and energy, and between energy and raw materials possessed both substitutional and complementary relationships.
