Will the nation-state successfully continue to uphold its significance in the post -industrial society as it has done
so in the industrial society? Will Weber's conception of the nation-state, as a compulsory political organization with monop-only of the legitimate use of physical force within a given territorial area, be relevant as it were in the past? It appears that the answers to both questions are yes. The nation-state is necessary 1) to coordinate and mediate different and sometimes conflicting interests of various communities in society, 2) to support local residents who have limited physical and cultural resources in the newly democratizing public area, and 3) to pacify the un avoid disputes and conflicts among different spheres in society. Moreover, given that national governments constitute most of the organizations and institutions at the global level, the nation-state is still an important unit of political organization even in this era of profound change.
In the 21st century, the age of post-industrial society, however, the nation-state as politically important unit in industrial society is confronting a critical phase of internal and external change. Internally, localization of power and an increasingly strong civil society are challenging the traditional centralized state power. Externally, increasing globalization is raising world issues that are beyond the scope of sovereignty of the nation-state. In this new state of affairs, knowledge and competitiveness are more crucial than natural resources in information society. Therefore, territory may be losing its significance and the meaning of sovereignty becomes increasingly vague.
In conclusion, even though the class dominated and bureaucratized state apparatus of industrial society will not be replaced by vitalization of social movement organizations and the mechanism of decentralization of politics, the social movements may substitute the logic of private area in civil society and the mechanism of decentralization may reduce the political roles of state. When we analyze the nation-state in this century in terms of the interactions among government, market and civil society, we can see that social movements are vitalized as the third alternative to the market and government and that globalism, such as informationalization, nea-liberalist logic or market, and transnational social movements, becomes more and more prevalent. Therefore, the new nation-state appears to be characterized as relatively 'weaker state' in the post-industrial society of 21st century.
