The purpose of this essay is to bring a suggestion for overcoming the locality of Korean Literature in this globalized world. My argument is that it is to debate on the locality of a local literature, such as Korean literature since, by nature, no literature is free from being local. A locality is a specific character of national literature, and it is meaningless to discuss the presence of so called "World Literature".
In this time of globalized literary activities, delving into how to enhance the essential quality of the literature seems more it is more productive than regurgitating the anachronic "local-global" debate. However, for a long time, most of researchers on Korean literature have spent their efforts on identifying unique characteristics for Korean local literature. Another traditional emphasis was on developing ways to disseminate Korean literature to foreign readership.
Now, more important issue here is how to establish the system on supporting Korean-Foreign language translators and readers. Also is important to build up government institutions in order to facilitate dissemination of Korean language and her culture overseas. Most important and relevant issue here is how to produce a variety of quality Korean literary works. What counts is not the geographic or cultural birthplace but the inherent quality of the literary works.
