In this thesis, I investigated the problem of place-making in Korean postwar novels. Because place is counstructed by security and stability of ordinary dailiness, it is different from space which has the property of insecurity and unstability. But, in the war and postwar period, any place(particularly private place) do not be easily made and maintained, because war replaces the ordinary dailiness with 'the dailiness of rough form' that can not guarantee the security and stability of everyday life.
Korean postwar novels also made efforts to make and maintain a private place. As usual, this place is a small space which the dailiness of rough form can not easily permeate into. In Son Chang-sup's novel(손창섭 소설), this place is presented as a poky and shabby room in which some persons hurted by war live with difficulty, but soon or later this room would be permeated by the dailiness of rough form.
The other place thar Korean postwar novels made is an isolated place, which is construaed in the nature or a traditional rural community that it is supposed to be free from the dailiness of rough form by the war. The isolated place is presented by Oh Yoog-Su's novels(오영수 소설) and Lee Bum-Soo's novels(이범선 소설). In fact, this place is unreal because Korean War was an all-out war that there was no difference between the front-line areas and the rear. But an ardent wish of Korean people is reflected in the place, who strongly want to be free from the ideological antagonism between capitalism and communism.
The third place that Korean postwar novels showed is a room which belongs to protagonist himself. This room is presented by Choi In-Hun's novels(최인훈 소설). In the room, the protagonist is free from the dailiness of rough form, and he concentrate his whole attention upon his idea that can change the destroyed and tom world by the war and the ideological antagonism into the peaceful and ideal world. But, ironically this place is made by the dailiness that transformed from rough form into ordinary according as recovery of war distortion. Namely, this place is an indication of ending of the postwar period.
