It's very popular idea in Korea that the Japanese royal family has its origin in Ancient Korea. But the only trustworthy historical record remains in Syokunihongi (續日本記) stating that the maternal line(和史) of Kanmu(桓武) derived from Prince Sunta(淳陀), the son of King Muryung(武寧王). In spite of the convincing remark of Tennou Akihito upon the Kanmu's lineage, the record of Shokunihongi seems to have several doubts.
Firstly, Nihonshoki(日本書紀) doesn't mention directly the relation of Prince Sunta and Prince Saa (斯我君), his son Prince Pubsa (法斯君), Secondly, even though the relationship between Sunta and Saa is father and son, another Question is still valid whether Yamatonokimi(倭君) and Yamatonohubito(和史) was the same family undoubtedly. In ancient Japan, Kabane(姓) system working for the classification of social status, the gap between kimi(君) and hubito(史) was relatively great. Moreover, hubito was only able to ascend the fifth rank in the offical rank system.
Evidently, there are some controversial points about the maternal lineage of Kanmu. But the relationship to Packjae royal family was repeatedly stressed during the reign of Kanmu and after his death Why?
Traditionally in ancient Japan, Tennou (天皇) was believed as the incarnation of the sun goddess, Amaterasu Oomikami (天照大神). But Kanmu had one and fatal imperfection to accede the throne, because his mother was the offspring of immigrant from Packjae. To overcome this demerit, Kanmu and his attendants stressed the fact of being the descendant of Muryoung to the contrary. Muryoung, the 18th posterity of Jumong(朱蒙), was also the descendant of the Korea son god(日神). In this way, Kanmu could be the integrating incarnation of Japan and Korea son god, and believed that he was able to gain the superior position over the preceding Tennous.
