The purpose of this paper is to investigate the characteristics o Chuk and Khan, and the changes in social status in Shilla period The term Chuk was used to refer to official ranks, governmen offices, government positions, and professional technicians as well According to the epigraph on the monument of Chang-young(昌寧) professional technicians were referred to as In(人), From th monument of Ojak(塢作), Chuk started to be used along with In an by the late 7th century, Chuk was more generally used as a term t refer to a separate class of professional technicians.
On the other hand, Khan was the title of the chief leader of the earlier states but used to refer to high-ranking officials after th monarchical country was established, Since the 7th century however, it had been recorded as an official position that manufactured and managed specific products for the affiliated offices in the King's Secretariat called Naesong(內省), which lend support the claim that Khan started being used to refer to the professional technicians.
