This paper has been concerned with the trend of the firs generation of the Koguryo drifting people who entered the Tang(唐) Dynasty before and after the collapse of their motherland and the changed sphere of their descendants. Although the status in Koguryo of those people who were commons or slaves in the Tan Dynasty and who were forcibly taken to the Dynasty were unknown they made a great deal of efforts to adapt into the new environment. Unlike these people, those noblemen who surrendere themselves to the Dynasty were able to enjoy privileges. Ther was, of course, real discrimination between the Koguryo driftin people and Tang people, but the former was able to exert thei abilities in Tang which had an open attitude towards other ethnic groups in terms of both nominal and legal aspects. For the drifting people who had not a base to support them, however, their main arena was battles. This was because these battles provided them with the only way to raise their status.
In the case of the first generation, shortly after the collapse a Koguryo their status in Koguryo became a criterion in determinin their status in China. From the late seventh century, however, thei activities in Tang played a more important role, compared to thei previous status in Koguryo. Since then, such phenomenon becam more noticeable.
The changes in the drifting people's society since the eighth century are as follows. First, a substantial number of outstanding men were produced from middle officials' families in local areas rather than ranking officials' families in the capital. This fact reflects that the pervious status of their ancestors in Koguryo did not come to playas an important factor in rising in the world and gaining fame any longer. Besides, some among the offspring of the drifting people succeeded in getting a position of civil officials and others passed the state examination. This tendency is quite different from that of their first generation who mainly served as military officers. In a similar vein, those people who are proficient in Chinese and who are accustomed to Chinese etiquette increased in their number. And the offspring of the drifting people was rapidly absorbed and assimilated into Chinese society. This was accelerated by their intermarriage to Chinese people. Accordingly, it was inevitable that many of them gradually came to lose their ethnic consciousness of Koguryo descendants.
