Now many universities and colleges in Asian countries open Korean study courses. Here is the list with the number of courses : Japan 22, China 22, Thailand 10, Vietnam 7, Kazakhstan 5, Malaysia 4, Indonesia 3, Taiwan 2, Mongolia 2, Myanmar 2, Uzbekistan 2, India 2, Jordan 1, Israel 1, Turkey 1, Philippines 1.
Most of those courses are concentrated in teaching Korean language. Literature is a rather neglected field. Some literary works easy to read are used to help language learning. Shortcomings in students' level, teachers' ability, and reading materials hinder to understand literature as literature.
To overcome such situation, the most important task is to promote the study of Korean literature by indigenous scholars of each countries. Serious researches with original points of view are needed. They can contribute definitively in developing Korean study not only in the respective countries, but also in Korea, and even in international academic society.
The scholars of Japan and China, produced some books with meaningful results to be read and to be translated in Korea. Omura Masuo initiated to study some lost parts of Korean modern literature. Saegusa Toshikatsu contributed much in understanding the relationship between Korean and Japanese literatures. Wei Xusheng published 6 volumes of collected writings. History of Korean Literature in volume 1 and Chinese Literature in Korea in volume 3 are systematic works showing Chinese way of thinking.
I want the scholars of the other countries also play an active role. Wider perspective is desirable. To understand Korean literature in the whole range of Asian literature and in world wide scale is a continuous goal. Through new comparative studies, multinational and multifarious, we can approach to it.
