The theory of the Corporate State was presented by Oswald Mosley as an alternative to corrupt capitalism of the 20th century. It was maintained that the Corporate State would solve the contradiction of imbalance between production and consumption in the capitalist society. This system could also be a political alternative to the old parliamentary system of the 19th century. From this perspective elections should be held not on a geographical basis but on an occupational basis. Through this process industrial Corporations would be organized and workers, employers and consumers would be represented in equal proportions in this body. Industrial Corporations would autonomously discuss and decide all the problems concerning each industry. The theory of the Corporate State prescribes high purchasing power to solve the disparity between production and consumption. To this end, Mosley demands the maintenance of the high wage-rate of workers. However, this prescription leads to the problem of raising the price of commodities. Mosley suggests the method of mass production to deal with this difficulty. Again to make mass production function effectively, a large market to absorb these commodities should be secured. In accordance with this logic, Mosley suggests that Britain should break away from the world capitalist market and utilize the British Empire as a useful economic area. In this whole process the State would play an important role. The role of the State is highly emphasized and the State would control any interrupting forces to achieve its goal. Particularly, financial interest should be restrained as financial interest could pursue its own interests regardless of industrial interests. The theory of the Corporate State suggested by O. Mosley has its own weaknesses. Could the industrial Corporations work and be maintained autonomously regardless of the influence of the State? Would individual freedom be secured in spite of the great stress on the role of the State? Wouldn't the leadership become the dictatorship? How could the people obtain the leadership of the State fairly and properly? Although there are some problems with the theory, Mosley's theory of the Corporate State could be a very significant discussion point from the perspective that this could be one logical alternative to the contradictions of the 20th century capitalist society.
